  1. I'm guessing here, so take it with a grain of salt. I think there are folks in the State Dept. and the Intel community in the U.S. that hope to defeat the Russians the way that the Soviets were defeated in Afghanistan. In this approach Russia will be tied to a warzone for about five years which will result in constant international condemnation, eventual disenchantment by the Russian populace, the bankrupting of the Russian economy, and hopefully the collapse of the Russian government. The cost of this approach is minimal for the United States which supplies the resistance with light arms that are easy to ship and don't require a lot of expertise to use. The cost to the Ukraine is wholesale destruction of the country while it slowly bleeds to death. Some big guns can be delivered, but most would be held back both to preserve the NATO arsenal and to avoid escalation into NATO territory which at this point neither NATO nor Russia wants.
