@johnng7107 He didn't say they deserve it, he said that if this were happening in the West that that would be the result. I think, by and large, he is mistaken in that assessment. As for their identity, the people of Hong Kong face a serious identity crisis. Their current political situation is on a clock and we're getting to the point where much of the population is now going to live to see that clock chime. Behind this sense of impending uncertainty, both the economic prosperity and political-economic importance of Hong Kong is declining relative to its Chinese counterpart cities, one of which is likely to swallow it shortly after the border is dismantled. I'm sure that this is stressful to Hong Kong residents and a certain amount of resistance to these impending realities is understandable, especially when any cooperation between the Hong Kong government and the central government is in-your-face evidence of a future that's political and economic liberalism, what many would say is the spirit of Hong Kong, is almost certain to be eliminated.
