Considering that their country is China, that doesn't make any sense at all.

@nunalol465 You're right, Hong Kong is not a communist country; it is neither communist, nor is it a country. It is a special economic enclave in a communist country. The country of the people that live in Hong Kong is China and to suggest that the seven million residents of Hong Kong determine the governing policies of the 1.3 billion strong country of China is preposterous. I know that's not what you meant, but that is what you said. As for the governing policies of the city, you can argue that the residents should have a strong say there. The problem is the leaders of the country are not willing to extend that power to the city's residents, and the residents are not demonstrating a responsible civic mind set.

By that logic, if my five demands aren't met I can trash my city with no consequences? You need a better argument. The people of Hong Kong can destroy their city so long as China thinks the consequences of stopping them outweigh the consequences of letting them continue. There is no valid legal argument for the continuation of the vandalism.

What's happening in Virginia is not going to start a revolution here.

They could just steamroll in and end the one country two systems policy now.

@annannlow7056 I thought that the support within Hong Kong for the demonstrators was much weaker than reported in the west until the election results a month ago. That surprised me and I had to reassess my perception of the situation at that point. Nevertheless, I still think the protests are grossly misguided and I'm shocked by the degree to which the central government has allowed this to continue for so long without moving in and cracking down on it. I believe that if this were occurring in my own country (USA) it would have been squashed six months ago. I don't know what the central government is seriously considering, but I commend their tolerance to this point.
