@agris8859 Russia had a friendly relationship with the Ukraine and then there was a western-backed coup three months before an election that probably would have seen a change of government anyway. Russia is being aggressive and hopefully it doesn't lead to war. I don't think it will unless it looks like Ukraine is likely to join either NATO, the EU or both. These are very real and very understandable Russian red lines that the west, primarily the U.S., is seemingly unwilling to recognize. Russia has made sure that there is enough chaos in Ukraine to presumably keep these applications at bay. The west's triumphalist disrespect for Russia and their utter disregard for Russian security concerns now and over the last three decades is the primary driver for this conflict, but Russia's treatment of Ukraine has admittedly been far from fraternal.

@agris8859 How the world works anymore depends on how the power wielders behave. You may support a view on how the world should work, but those who disagree have a say in it as well.

@yuriypr72 I remember Russians talking about it in the nineties. Americans weren't particularly interested in listening to those voices. The Russians were okay with having a united Germany in NATO but they were complaining when Poland, Hungary, and the Czech Republic joined. They were absolutely furious when the Baltic states joined in '04 and the United States just told them to pound sand.

@agris8859 I deeply apologize. I had a long wordy reply and somehow I hit the keyboard in such away to erase it all. I'm not going to try to rewrite it. I do appreciate your willingness to debate in depth. I'm sorry that I am unwilling to respond in kind right now.

It doesn't have to happen. Taiwan could reach out to negotiate a peaceful reincorporation. Absent that, it's going to happen at some point.
