  3. Power gets to determine what we think the truth is. Because of this, it's difficult to know what the objective truth is. Power allows for the hiding of truth and for the proliferation and acceptance of falsehood because power struggles shape the narrative. Power can also push forward truth, if its wielders desire it. The less a falsehood (or a truth) fits our perceptions, the more power is required to make it seem to be the truth.

  4. Cold War era ideology on the western side was anything but unbiased. I read in a science publication from the seventies that the Soviets were not the first to successfully send and return a man from space because he had to parachute out at the end. We all label as true that which feeds our bias and label as propaganda that which does not. There is actual truth, and we all seek it until it begins to offend us, at which point we seek it much less enthusiastically. We settle, because the truth hurts. This is true of progressives. It is also true of conservatives. And it was just as true of Truman, Churchill and Reagan as it was of Lenin, Stalin and Mao.
