While naval infantry, what in the states we call marines, are excellent combatants, their nature is offensive. That's not to say that they cannot defend, but it's not their specialty. They are proficient at a managed retreat however. There's a fantastic example of this in the Korean Civil War at the Battle of Chosin Reservoir in which the courage and determination of the U.S. Marines, along with dominant air cover, allowed for a withdrawal from an impossible situation. Sorry, I'm going off on a tangent.
