  1. China is jealous of Korea? I'm sorry. Korea's culture is wonderful—I love Korea—but that's laughable. China is extremely proud of its culture, and the Chinese really don't give a damn if the west or anybody else recognizes it for all its greatness. I think Korea has a legitimate beef about China erasing Korean history regarding the Korean kingdoms that existed in what is now part of China and I don't think China's response was sufficient. China is understandably nervous about potential seperatist sentiment but they should be confident enough not to play that particular game. The Korean outrage regarding the wearing of a hanbok by a Korean Chinese is deeply hypocritical. Do you seriously want China to stamp out Korean heritage among its Korean population? God, I hope not. The kimchi thing is one I can see both sides of. Sechuan pickled veggies taste a lot like kimchi and I don't think either dish is descended from the other. Chinese folk music sounds an awful lot like appalachian bluegrass, but I'm almost a hundred percent certain that this is entirely coincidental. I think the same is true of Korean kimchi and Sechuan paocai—the eerie similarity is coincidental. I sometimes refer to saurkraut as German kimchi, after all, they have some striking similarities, and they're both delicious. Korea is awesome in and of itself. It's not necessary for Korea to worry about cultural appropriation. Korea should have enough confidence to treasure its own culture without worrying about whether or not other countries have similar trappings. And they should definitely not try to restrict Koreans from communities in other countries from proudly importing their Korean heritage into the cultures of the countries to which they are citizens.
