  1. I started teaching in 1994 in London. It was a standing view in 1998 when I went for an interview that the hierarchy of job offers was black women first, black men and white women equally likely second, and if you were a white man waiting in the staff room with the other three you may as well go home. I got the job because the black woman turned it down. The panel told me that she had demanded sixth form classes but the timetables were already done. At least they didn't bend on that score.
