You've got it backwards. Tom wasn't anti VPN. He was only stating that not all VPN's are equal, and many advertise that they do things they either don't, or claim to do things the internet already does, like his example of how most sites now have the lock on them. If he was anti VPN he wouldn't have initially taken their money. Plus, ExpressVPN is the highest rated VPN service. I'm not a tech nerd so I trust the experts and they all say Express is as good as it gets so I signed up. There's a lot of advantages, including getting American Netflix when I'm in Canada, or using Toronto as my location so my Oilers's games aren't blacked out since I'm geographically close to them for local blackout purposes. Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater because for goddamn sure the security experts use VPN's themselves.

The craziest part is there is anything, or even so much is ask a poignant question to somebody online, you're automatically accused of either being a troll or a Russian bot etc. Yet the same people somehow simultaneously acknowledge that there truly are people that are trying to create division, yet then they just yell at you. How can I be aware of a problem and then specifically actively carry out that directive?

For the same reason on your wedding day you talk about how awesome your new wife is, not about how she made you late so you missed that flight, or how she hogs the covers and snores.

@mattb4640 "yeah i didnt like that for 3 reasons. 1. you're not his dad 2. the kid just had a nice conversation with you and now you're pulling a power move on him 3. you just did that on camera for a million people to see" In the South, they believe it takes a village to raise a child. This is very normal behaviour. They take it as a sign of respect. I bet that in your culture there are customs and norms that you teach the younger generations, but yours are different so you don't even notice you're doing it. Or maybe in your culture you don't instruct someone else's child no matter what, but again, that's your culture. Every society places certain expectations on the behaviour of the upcoming generation. All around the world these customs are different. Do you think all of them are bad, or just the ones not like yours? Personally I think purposely doing a firm handshake is a stupid custom and I don't like looking people in the eye. SO what? I do it for the 2 seconds it takes and I move on with my life.

A tenured professor with decades of experience is a faux intellectual how? Because you happen to disagree with his conclusions? One of the two of you are faux intellectuals, and it ain't him, buddy. That's the problem with progressives. They dismiss anything they don't agree with as stupid or not worthy. It's a delusional state to exist in.

Which one?

@owenthomas2914 Amen. It's like schools want to keep science a goddamn secret. They take the most incredible things and make them as boring as possible.

You watched that whole video and THAT'S you takeaway? FFS, he's excited about wonder itself. He likes the thought that there will always be things left to discover. He enjoys the search just as much as the answer. Of all things, I can't believe someone got cranky over that. sigh
3
Go to any "non partisan" web page question the progressive dogma and get attacked hard. Literally just asking questions in a respectful and objective manner gets you crucified.

You can think this experiment up all you want, but unless you have a Phantom you ain't doin it.

Glad to be of service.

I don't like the term "education". All it really means these days is that somebody signed a piece of paper claiming that you learned something from an institution you paid money to, as if that's the only way that matters. In many areas I think formal education is actually putting you in a disadvantage because you only learn from one source, from one point of view. "Self-taught" people tend to be more well-rounded in their knowledge base, and these days there are so many excellent sources of cheap or free education that a formal education is not an advantage. Economics and finance is probably the best example I can think of, but there are countless others, especially creative ones like web design and video editing etc. All that matters is the work you produce, not how/where you learned it.

@SmilingDevil Tracing string will not get anywhere near the resolution you'd need for something so precise.

That's one aspect of some rural folk that rubs me the wrong way. My parents come from farms and there's a little bit of that inner monologue eye roll they do when you don't understand something simply because it's new to you. It's like "Hey buddy, I know a tremendous amount that you don't know but I don't mock you for it". They're often standoffish when they first meet you, but then really, really warm to you after a bit. I don't like that. I'd rather they be nice and friendly right up front if that's who they are in the end anyway.

Everyone in this video is living life the right way.

What a bout a whole pile of small track balls?

"doesn’t talk down to his fellow Southerners" This implies they are naturally "less"? I'm not sure what you're trying to say. Why would talking down to people simply because of where they're from ever cross his mind in the first place, especially when they are doing something you have to have money and smarts to do in the first place? I get that people with a southern accent are looked down upon by suburban kids from the north, but Destin isn't that.

7:35 That's a sun dog, my little Southerner. Your reaction when hitting cold for the first time was adorable, as was not knowing what a sun dog is. Greetings from the Canadian prairies.

One year after you posted this video, America is so unbelievably divided it's beyond belief. People are rioting and burning parts of cities. It's really really sad.

I love JP but I agree with the principle of the Aristotle quote "It's the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it". The world would be far better off if people were willing to listen to any and all sides with an open mind. And obviously he didn't disagree with it too much because he promoted it. Just sayin.
2
That's what I was thinking. We see such a narrow bandwidth. That's why I have an infrared converted camera. Let's me see what I normally can't.
1
Careful now, don't give people are opportunity to sully a comments section by talking about things other than what the video was about.
1
That's one thing about rural living: the people there have a comfort level and love for their lifestyle and customs and so long as you stay within that milieu, they are usually very happy, kind and generous. Much more open and friendly than city folk as a rule.
1
So what's the alternative? Besides, all the "police" means is that they'll take a peek. So long as they are only targeting purposeful trolls it's basically the best they can do.
1
Some of the bubbles in the end video get sprung from the sides, then hit other bubble and break apart and get smaller and then those bounce off the walls faster. Wash, rinse, repeat. Really cool stuff.
1
Carolyn, I know you aren't referring to the country where Kinder eggs are illegal. Or the one with who's largest city limits the size of the soda pop you buy.
1
Love the 2 Kings biblical reference at the end. I googled it (I know zero about religious scriptures) and I suggest others do to because it's pretty clever. No spoilers. Google it yerselves, folks!
1
It's shameless the way you two flirt.
1
Is it confidence your lack, or fresh inspiration? When you are excited enough about something, you forget all about whatever that "confidence" thingy is all about and you just rush into it because you want to, not because you are brave.
1
Why would you assume this would be a right wing thing? Eyeballs are eyeballs. Also, YouTube itself has a massive ideological bent. It means nothing to me if other people are also playing that game. Also, "fake news" is such a broad topic. Some pages literally just invent nonsense, whereas others are very misleading to the point of being fake news "There are fine people on both sides" being the most high profile fake because Trump never said that about white nationalists.
1
I don't know what he actually meant by it, but when Steve Jobs said "Good artists borrow, great artists steal" to me it means that you start with someone else's idea (borrow), but then you take what's there and make it your own (steal). You own it now. It's not somebody else's idea anymore, it's your own thing.
1
Stupid people aren't capable of grasping all of what JP says. There's a level of intellect you require to understand what he's saying on a fundamental level. Only a stupid person would say he's a stupid person's smart person because agree or disagree with him, you have to be able to think at a high level to "get it" either way.
1
You are the second person I've seen make that same comment and as I'm still scrolling I have yet to see one single person who has any problem whatsoever. Where are the freakouts?
1
I've always wished English had a gender neutral pronoun. We need another word for "human" because even as a kid hearing he/she was cringey.

@Eagle3302PL I think city individualism has its benefits as well. It allows for more individuality and creative change. I think both ways are important.

I wonder how a vert skateboarder would handle this vs average joe since they are constantly changing directions with a slight shift in G's. Skateboarder are also very familiar with rapid deceleration when a trick goes bad. The ground is hard.

1:47 I'm gonna stop you right there. I bet you my whole paycheck you I can edit two photos taken side by side of the same thing and you won't be able to tell which was which. The only exception I'll even remotely entertain is that at very high ISO/ASA you might be able to tell. Even then I have serious doubts though. Dude, at 34:20 you use the disingenuous, apples to orange comparison. Even the framing is different. The film one has more environment. I can soften up and add tons of grain to achieve that look, and change the blues and reds. Just because you "feel" it, doesn't make it right. That's like insisting a mini van going 100 is slower than a lowrider going 100 simply because the height makes the relative road changes look different so it "feels" not as fast. Science cares about your speedometer, not your feels. Much of your "feels" comes from personal nostalgia. Someone who is 14 might look at the old timey film photos and think the look awful because they don't harken him back to his day so of youth. I was a skateboard videographer and these days the filming styles are different and I don't like them. I prefer the techniques I grew up with. They are my comfort zone. Today's kids think they look "old school". I'm attracted to them cuz that's what I was familiar with in my glory days, not because it's inherently superior, no matter how many reasons I can come up with why mine is better.
1
I'm totally going to try that.

You never hear about endangered animals being poached without China's name coming up.

Interesting. I drove from Canada to Wyoming for that eclipse and I had multiple cameras, including infrared. I definitely want to go again this year, but this time mostly to just view it. I want to enjoy it instead of being worried about multiple cameras.
1
Do, it means you one of the 12% enlightened.
1
Did you see the eclipse in the path of totality? I drove from Canada to Wyoming and had an even more remarkable story with regards to how I got on an isolated farm. My dad isn't impressed by anything. At all. Even he was blown away (then the second the sun started coming back he's all "Okay, let's get going".

Dr Dre has used samples from Barbara Streisand. Shoe shave been designed after cars. Outside influences are almost always a major factor in greatness, often directly but always at least indirectly. Just look at biomimicry for the most blatant examples. Steve Jobs once gave a speech about it to a grad class. Pay attention to the whole world, not just your own bubble. I once had a full out racist, misogynist bigot help heavily influence my ideas on objectivity and I'm eternally grateful to him for unintentionally revealing truths to me about the how "right" and "wrong" are just concepts as opposed to absolutes.
