  3. You can easily become numb to it when you see it all the time. It's good to sometimes imagine that it was your life. You were living like that, a zombie hunched over in the middle of the street staring at who knows what because your mind is far, far away. It's not a pleasant thought and really helps with the compassion.

If you can't feel empathy for someone who had a rough go, then what does that say about you? I saw a TED talk once about a guy who planned to shoot up a school because he was in so much pain, but then ONE person was kind to him and it turned his whole life around and he's now married with a kid and gives talks about it. Sometimes compassion is the greatest weapon against tragedy.

  5. These days at universities and at that CHAZ occupied zone during the George Floyd riots in Seattle they had segregated spaces...in the name of tolerance. What?! It seems as though a certain faction of the population actively tries to turn back all the racial tolerance gains we've made. I am Canadian and went to school in the 80's and 90's and race wasn't an issue. It didn't really ever come up and there were tons of Arabs and Asian and black people and absolutely nobody I knew gave a shit in the least.

  6. It's interesting to me when people see all conflict in terms of race, especially when everyone involved is the same race. I saw young men fighting young men. Of course I noticed they were black (I have eyes and ears) but it's the same as noticing they all dressed more like businessmen instead of like modern day gangbangers. It's an observation as opposed to an opinion. I really hope when you say "all we got is each other" I really hope you mean humans, because to think of your race first as a means to exclude the rest of humanity is just sad. And if you do, then you can't get mad when the exclusion is thrown back at you.

  7.  @andrewhooper7603  the people that you got fired, were they saying or doing anything that was work related and hurt other people? If not, then, you and I have very different views. I think all kinds of people have views that are absolutely abhorrent, but I would never try to get them fired from their jobs if their views were unrelated. If these people weren't doing anything other than expressing views you disagreed with then I don't see how that's any different than a 1984 I thought crime. You wanted them fired from a factory job. That means you believe they shouldn't have any form of employment at all. Then what? They're forced to go to the streets and become criminals? I'd rather have people have terrible thoughts that they share with their friends as opposed to taking them out of society where they will be forced to take much more drastic measures.

That literally means "white man only if we have to". It's not the end of the world, but to say that white people can't understand what it's like to be discriminated against is nuts. I'm trying to find a basement suite where I live and as soon as I started replying to ads with my full name, my responses dropped by at least half. 95% of the units are in Indian households and I've been specifically turned down because of my race. I've had Indian girls say their dad would lose it if they brought a white boy home. Again, not the end of the world, but I'm so sick and tired of hearing that white people don't know what discrimination feels like (when I've received it, in no uncertain terms, with my access to a partner, a place to live, and a place to work).

In rural areas people don't degenerate to violence and theft in the same way because everyone is in the same predicament as you so you feel equal.

  16. You're not wrong, but I look at that as a badge of honor. These people are trying to keep a level playing field and they're not asking for compensation to do it. These aren't victimless crimes. The cheaters are taking the spot of somebody else who would otherwise actually be doing the work and learning and taking that knowledge out into the world.

I live in Vancouver and the average home price is almost $2 million whereas the average wage is $75,000. A regular married couple could never save enough for a house. Ever. Not even close.

The thought that black athletes had been celebrated, going back decades (Jesse Owens etc) and there were movie stars and jazz stars and all of that, yet those same people couldn't sit down in a restaurant blows my mind. A soldier is someone who is basically out of sight, out of mind (the wars are always overseas) but the entertainers and athletes? They were heroes. Then again, these days I've seen lots of videos of people getting yelled at and denied service for wearing a MAGA hat. They wore a hat with the slogan of the sitting POTUS and were treated like shit. Unfortunately, people will always find reasons to be dicks to each other.

  25. I'm a far from a Social Justice Warrior as it gets, but the way vets felt about keeping quiet about their feelings and what they went through is "toxic masculinity" at it's worst. People need to be able to open up about this shit. I can't imagine bottling up thoughts of killing families because there was a chance one might be an enemy. No wonder they snap. It's good that you can objectively look at why your dad was an asshole because it's not a black and white thing. You seem like you have a lot of compassion and that's wonderful.   28. Maybe that's an added layer to this video. This video is kind of like a bait and switch, and so is the thumbnail. The video is about a student who is supposed to be properly studious and doing right by themselves and the education system, but was disingenuous. Putting attractive people in the thumbnail, and then not having them in the video is certainly a similar concept.

  31.  @blackholeentry3489  nothing impresses my father. He's a really nice guy but he takes everything in stride. When I went to Wyoming in 2017, it was a family affair. My dad drove and he took my mom because he figured she would like to see the eclipse. During totality, he was just spinning in circles looking at the horizon and was blown away. That's just not something that happens. I really wanna see that again and now I'm really sad again that I'm not going there in a week, haha. As I get older and my body breaks down, I need different reasons to go on vacations, and I think chasing eclipses is as good a reason as any to go somewhere. That's awesome you've chosen to do it so many times. I sense you don't regret a thing. Plus, the disappointments make when it does work out so much better.

  35. I love the point about how condescending race talk can be. It's no different in 2022. The BLM movement was such a great example of this. BLM was a total fraud. The self professed Marxist founders left and bought millions of dollars worth of homes, and many millions are unaccounted for. They were condescending in their message. Then there the corporate and government voice about victimhood and those poor, poor black folks we must step up and save, as though they are incapable of doing anything themselves. It was gross and condescending on both sides. I love this channel because it keeps my feet planted firmly on the ground by reminding me that what I think is novel and out of control is just an extension of things that started generations ago and I need to relax.

  40. I wish there was a way defined out what slave life was like on aggregate. I wonder often if stories like this were the norm or the exception. Let's be honest, the most extreme versions of everything are the ones most likely to be told. I want to know about the good, bad, and the ugly. It seems we mostly hear about the ugly. Since slavery, historically, was just an accepted fact of life all over the world and slaves were taken as a result of conquest, not because one group thought the other group was inferior, I have a hard time believing that every slave owner was an unfeeling psychopath. Some of the founding fathers of America were slave owners themselves, while also advocating for the end to slavery. I'm willing to bet that the experiences of slaves and slave owners was more complicated than we are being led to believe.

  52.  @bonniegaither3994  but is the answer to go the other way and have people who go into the trades and work hard and borrow money to start their own business have to subsidize people who want degrees in non-practical fields? personally, I think you should have to pay for your school entirely, and then, if your degree lands, you a real world job in that field, then, each year you are in that field you should have a percentage of your debt wiped out. I don’t think anybody has a problem with helping people out to varying degrees if they’re going to school for something practical, but you have to understand how this feels to people who didn’t go to college. Again, if you’re a plumber and you wanna start your own business, so you borrow money and go into debt to buy more equipment and vehicles, nobody cares. No one‘s gonna help you with your expenses, even though they were done to try and make a better life for yourself. Why does nobody want to help out that guy but it’s expected that we help out people going to college? It’s a tough one.

I make over $100,000 a year and if we want to go by the standard guideline of using 30% of your net income for housing costs, then I can’t even afford a one bedroom condo rental in a halfway decent building. I’m not talking luxury. Those are much more. I mean a nice modern building. I can’t even afford a one bedroom rental if I am trying to stick to the traditional guidelines. If 20 years ago you told me I’d be making six figures I thought I would’ve been loaded. it’s nothing to pay $3000 here for a small 1br. Things have to change. Houses are $2m on average here. 2 freakin million for a regular house in a 20+ yr old neighbourhood. There’s zero chance I’ll ever own a home.

I photographed one both standard and in infrared in 2017 and I'm going to miss the one in a few days and I'm so upset about it. I can't afford to get away from work. I say having to vote both right and left isn't a bug, it's a feature. There's almost nothing in this world that is a perfect solution on its own.

Even if it's cloudy the rest of the trip should still be spectacular. TBH ,the real reason I don't go this year is because I confused the dates of the April and Oct eclipses. I thought the total was October and now I can't afford any hotels, and the rentals are all out of what I'd want in Austin, which is where I'd fly to because outside there is the best odds for sunshine in the US.

The funny part about last time is that my infrared camera pics turned out exactly like my regular camera. Was not expecting that. I only had one 600mm lens though so I had to switch camera bodies back and forth onto the same lens on my tripod so I didn't get to experience much first hand. So sad about this year but I'm praying for Iceland. Maybe I should check the regular weather there during that time of year.
