He's close. Crime is a result of economic disparities. If everybody is poor, there isn't much crime. It's when you have a mix of haves and have nots that crime increases. This is why there's not much crime in Third World countries outside of the cities.

I remember seeing studies on crime vs incomes and they claimed the evidence was clear that crime is greatly increased when you were poor and were near people who were way, way better off than you. They found this all over the world, not just North America where they preach the welfare state and victimization blah blah blah.. Of course there will be exceptions. I also think that that when everybody is poor in a smaller locale it would be very socially ostracizing to be the rubbere who ends up with more money and stuff. It's too obvious. In a city you can hide that a bit better. When everyone is poor it's more of a "we're all in this together" and mutually beneficial relationships will help you out way more than just stealing. I'm sure the reasons are mutli factorial tho. All I know is that apparently the literature is clear that income inequality produces the crime, not poverty in and of itself. Hey, the poor in wealth countries live better than the average person in super poor countries. Poverty is extremely relative. The poorest in western nations still have indoor plumbing, electricity, running water, access to safe food from all over the world 24/7 etc. @oldschoolpatriot3236

I wouldn't be shocked in the very least, if Gavin Newsom ends up being the Democratic nominee, and he wins. The main stream media covers for him to such a degree that you'll never understand what's going on unless you actively seek out independent media. Most people don't have time for that sort of thing..

Slums are in cities, no? Cities are the very places that have the wealth disparities. @picklemetimbers3003

You're looking at this through a very American lens. I specifically stated this is a global phenomenon. @bobby_luo

@SMRT79 Anybody who doesn't have electricity or plumbing in 2024 in America doesn't have it on their own accord. Nobody has a full time job and lacks these things. Any exceptions are exceptions that prove the rule. Anybody who wants to can get a job that pays the bills. And I won't be 10 until April.

@joeszymanski3540 it’s not my conclusion. It’s been studied by economists. It does make sense to me though. I grew up poor working class in a small town during a recession. Everyone was hurting and there was very little crime. Just people helping out where they could because we really all were all in it together. Now I work in the worst part of downtown Vancouver. I get asked for change WAY less when I’m dressed in hi viz work gear even though it means I obviously have job. Nicer cars are way more likely to get broken into even though they’re just as likely to have treasure in the glove box as the cheap used car. Of course there will be exceptions but overall the trend is for income inequality to be the major driving force.
