I'm only a minute into this video, but I'm not gonna watch the rest of it if they don't mention the literal thing that causes inflation. I actually came to the comments to see if anyone was mentioning that, because if not, this whole video is literally useless. Other than a short term supply shock, these days inflation only comes from the printing press. It's no wonder we have such a bad policy when for some reason, the media does not want to acknowledge that the government is 100% the cause of inflation. I'm not surprised people have no idea.

@harrisjm62 in a closed loop system, perhaps. But this is a global economy. It's not just a coincidence that literally every time government creates a bunch of money they a bunch of inflation. The causation could not be more clear.

can you name me some when the cost-of-living goes up for an entire society that was not proceeded by an increase in the money supply? Can you think of any examples where there’s not even a correlation, let alone causation? And if it’s greed, why does it only come about society wide at a specific given time? Were all the companies benevolent before that?

@aolson1111 move where? It's almost impossible for most Canadians to get into America (I can give you countless stories, including myself, of Canadians that get rejected for American work, visas, despite qualifications, jobs, already lined up, no criminal record, blah blah blah), and the only other options are to go very far away to a completely different culture and language. So again, be specific. Where is it realistic to move?

Ignore this video in its entirety because it doesn't mention the literal actual cause of inflation. Governments printing more money. During Covid most governments printed vast amounts of money, way way way way way more than normal so of course prices went up. You have way more money chasing the same goods. That's economics 101 end it hurts my heart that our education system and media completely glossed over it since it affects us all so severely.

@theshi3152 nailed it. Productivity is up, which means each worker is empirically worth more to the business. Then again, as I'm saying this, I realize that businesses are also hit from all sides from the government so perhaps the wages we should've got are going to things like carbon taxes, and all types of other things government hits business with. All I know is that in the end, my wages are absolutely not even coming close to keeping up with inflation.

It's such a tough one, because I love the idea of capitalism and free markets, but they inevitably lead to consolidation. It's basically a law of nature at this point. How on earth do we keep the benefits of capitalism while stopping all of this consolidation?

@harrisjm62 are you on glue? There is an extremely direct correlation between governments, going nuts with the printing press, and rising prices. Every single time everywhere in the world. That's literally economics 101.

In housing this is absolutely true beyond a shadow of a doubt, as well as automobiles. Probably not for things like major appliances, but if you're buying something that's equivalent to a year or more's worth of your wages, you absolutely will hold off if the prices are noticeably coming down.

@vipu6821 during Covid, prices went absolutely bananas, and everybody knew they would come back down to earth. if there’s a noticeable spike in prices, you are definitely more likely to shop carefully. also, cars absolutely do come down year over a year. The used market is awesome. Wait eight years and you can get the vehicle you love for half price.

@vipu6821 during the pandemic, used car prices went through the roof. New ones as well. We knew the prices would come down. Also, with cars, you might wait and buy the same vehicle used and save a boatload. Another factor is interest rates, and this one is HUGE. Most people don’t make large purchases in cash and the difference between a 3% interest rate and a 7% interest rate is massive to the overall price so if you believe interest rates will come down in the next six months, you’re way more likely to hold off that purchase because it absolutely lowers the amount of money you have to pay for it. You will hold your old vehicle together with duct tape, and string.

Great point. We are at the stage now. Where are the only proper way to keep long-term savings is in the S&P. If your savings aren't in some thing that roughly keeps up with inflation at the very least, then, yeah, saving half your paycheque isn't gonna help you much 50 years later when that money is worth a fraction. Inflation means you can't just save money.

@ORCIproductions productive for what? Just so it can go up enough that it would be the same as if there was no inflation and you just put it under your mattress? It means you end up exactly the same, but with extra steps.

The last inflation was 100% caused by government printing presses. During Covid every country went bananas, printing money, and issuing debt, then inflation went nuts. It's not rocket science. It's literally economics 101. The fact that this video doesn't even mention it is beyond reprehensible. The media absolutely doesn't wanna put the blame on government at all. That's because vox is very left-wing and I guarantee if Trump was still in office, they would be blaming him.

@aolson1111 I have bought sugar maybe three times in my life and I'm almost 50. It's terrible for you. I think it's funny. That people think things that are objectively really bad for you are necessities, as if it's a human rights issue
