For my own personal morals, you hit the nail right on the head and I've used that argument often. I can't look at an elk and say "I'm going to kill you, skin you, cook you and eat you. Not because I have to, but because I want to", which is literally what's happening. That's just me though. Pointing out that elk will die a horrible death regardless is an absolutely valid point. Still, just because suffering will happen doesn't mean I need to contribute to it.
