  1. Thinking you can torpedo an asteroid is the wrong way to go. That's relying on doing it with one shot. It would be better to try and push it away, something that could be accomplished as reaching the asteroid even if it takes a few tries. Pushing it would be easy as far as the energy required because you could be pushing it for a while and there's absolutely nothing to resist a sideways move.
