  1. In an open government, being a registered voter means you're old enough to vote and the government lets you. Having to be registered as a voter and for a political party isn't open government. It's too easy to game that.

  2.  @tommccarthy3052  I'm surprised you kind of don't know. A political party is their own business, having their own members, where their candidates come from. Of course, they're only going to let members vote for anything. As far as I know it's federal law, they have to allow political observers from other political parties to attend. Your thinking might be influenced by the recent trend of political parties donating to an opposing candidate they like, instead of one they don't.
