@BelleOfAmherst Let me say more. The Inuit leader who took me with him for a census of wintering Inuit, asked if I wanted to go with him while he chopped open a fishing hole. I was thinking ice fishing on Lake Erie. The ski-doo was commercial, huge. Women took four empty oil barrels off the trailer behind it, put a box for me to sit on, and each woman gave a blanket to wrap around me. We flew out of Goose Bay and out onto arctic ice. We went past the sight of land. There was fluffy patches of, not snow, but the snowflakes that made it out there. And then there was nothing but black ice, what he said was ancient ice, stronger than concrete. He stopped and shut the motor off. I got afraid a little, knowing my friends' motors. There was a small hole, maybe twelve inches wide, and he took out an axe and chopped the ice off, what froze on top of a six foot hole. I could see the water rising up and falling like wave action. I'll never figure out how the Elder found it. He had to hold me so I could stand, having to learn how to stand on that ice, and slide a little, unable to walk. He said watch out for the wind, losing three friends who blew away and went into the water. When I came back and visited my parents, my mother said something opened my Scottish heart. Now that I have one my parents talked to me that way, and that still makes me wonder.
