Defense lawyers in America aren't employees of the court. They can do anything they want to get their clients "off" or a "fix", not justice. That's why they can personally attack witnesses, instead of just questioning their witness testimony. The United States doesn't have any extradition laws for financial crimes committed in foreign countries. Back then, there was more land owned by France and Spain than the British, Americans being ocean-side colonies.
