Cocaine was in many American products back then, when the drug that was abused the most was laudenum, a horse tranquilizer made from the same poppy where heroin, morphine and opium comes from. When you see wild west movies with the "snake oil" salesman who has a cure for everything, that's what it's about. What became the substitute for cocaine in food? Caffeine.
