Panasonic's press release is titled (google it): "Panasonic Energy Ready to Commence Mass Production of 4680 Automotive Lithium-ion Batteries" Their actual statement: "These new cells possess five times the capacity of the 2170 cell. This not only extends the driving range of EVs, but also reduces the number of cells required for the same battery pack capacity." To a knowledgeable person, that statement is passable, since we know that the 4680 have some advantages over the 2170. Many journalists are clearly clueless about the difference in size of the batteries, but Panasonic is the first to blame for throwing this information out to the press, knowing full well that many would misinterpret their statement the way we saw it.
