That's why we hear of delta and maybe the lamda variants out of the over 1000 different ones we have found. It's because the other 998 variants actually didn't help the virus or maybe even hurt it. Not nearly as cut and dry as you say.

This keeps going until either the immune system develops antibodies to combat the virus or the host dies. Vaxed person. Same beginning as non vaxed After cell bursts sending millions of viruses through the body the body starts ramping up antibodies immediately due to already developing them when vaccinated. Virus doesn't spread nearly as far and is killed off quickly. Leading to less severe symptoms and far less chance of infecting others.

The vaccines prevented them from developing such a bad reaction to said vrius that it wasn't allowed to grow and be transmitted to others. You still get the virus, you just don't get nearly as sick. So after the polio vaccine effort, the number of people unvaccinated that could allow themselves to become contagious lowered until there was no polio left.
