They got the subpoena because trumps own secret servics staff ratted him out. I can only infer from that (because we don't know forsure) that trump wasn't handing over the boxes. While they were in that process the DOJ told him to lock them up better. You are trying to find any tid bit in the timeline to suit your narrative and its not working. You don't need to be in the room. Just listen to what's said.
