There was a Roman Emperor born in North Africa to a North African mother. He grew up in North Africa, otherwise known as the South Mediterranean coast. Sometimes it is claimed that he was black. When he met a black man on Hadrian's Wall, he was so astonished, his reaction so noteworthy, that it was noted and comes down to us through history. Sub Saharan African's were so rare in the Roman Empire that the Emperor, surely a man who would meet people from afar all the time (and no doubt had the odd slave), had never met one and didn't even know that they existed.
