What he did(as a whistleblower) was make repeated attempts to crack a password through a hacker. It's an actual conspiracy perpetuated BEFORE the data retrieved was reviewed and released to the public. It's a known criminal act, and he went in with the blinders off. Once he GOT the information, he did the right thing in my opinion. How would you feel if someone living in your house, eating your food and watching your children hacked into your google account and shared your porn searches with your parents, co-workers and friends? Free pass, or get the fuck out?
