  1. Survival Lilly use only very dry(10% moisture) wood. Hardwood only. Pine has air between the fibers and pitch that pops and sends up those red sparks. Fruit or nut trees are the best choices to cook on. Pine needles can be used as tea, however. The tunnels you built supply the fire with fresh air. The fire will not use less oxygen from the air you are trying to breathe, suck less air into the teepee, thereby becoming more efficient. The liner is acting as a soffet, and the cold air coming from the outside is pushing the smoke out without affecting the inside temperature. Good overall design, but worked the opposite as you had imagined. The more fresh air to the fire means it will burn more fuel. You can close off the outside halfway to slow the fire down before retiring, but I wouldn't completely block them with the liner in.
