  1. The real trick is: Skip the fares. Just skip them altogether and ride for free. Fares are largely pointless. My bestie and biking buddy is a Tri Met guy in Portland, OR, and he let slip the dirty secret: Fares account for less than 6% of the operating budget. The real money is a vast, tangled conglomerate of city, county, state and fed sources. Daypasses are theater, so they might as well just cut it out altogether and say 'Get on, lets roll'
