When I was a young Medic recruit at Ft Sam, we got to be strapped into a exterior rescue stretcher that would be attached above the skids of old UH-1 Iroquoy Hueys, and get taken for a ride in a simulated Medivac over the post. What we didn't know was that there was a fine tradition amongst the aviators: to mess with us young trainees. They would fly NOE at high speed, then climb very high at a steep angle, then cut the drive to the rotors, and basically drop the collective into a straight down free fall, and the crew cheif would start screaming "WE'RE GOING DOWN! WE'RE GOING DOWN!" Needless to say, being strapped into a stretcher above the skids, hearing the screaming and seeing us all drop LIKE A BRICK, I came close to needed some new BDU trousers. They laughed maniacally when they re-engaged full flight momentum with less than 100 feet back down to the ground. I didn't think it was very funny.
