  4. That's no artillery/indirect fire damage. That leaves massive cratering and is inherently sloppy. It's no RPG damage either, that leaves very side-on evidence. That's airstrikes taking out all that armor. You tell me: How many ground attack jets do you see the separatists using? Russia is launching fast movers from their side, hitting the Ukrainian ground forces at night from high altitude at speed, and going right back into Russia to land so long as their goons on the Ukranian side are keeping the press at bay.

  7. When I was a young man, and enlisted, I recall almost half of my Drill Instructors and Cadre had thick accents, a deep sense of American patriotism and mad warrior skills. For many, English wasn't their first language, and nothing is harder to understand than a DI with a thick accent telling you what a fuckhead moron you are while you're doing flutter kicks. They were heroes and role models to a 17-year-old me all those decades ago, and I can't picture their like being forced to leave the US after teaching me to be a man and defend that very same country. That these men will salute the flag (on their Mexican birth soil!) that betrayed them shows that they are better patriots in adversity than most of you fucks are in while living in comfort.

  8. It's difficult for people who haven't been in a TOC to understand how much micromanagement goes on before we hit a target. The many, many layers of authorization before you can defend against armed hostile threats is cumbersome, but made necessary by a combination of minimum force application, reporters who are drooling to create a "trigger happy" scandal scoop and advance their careers, and deconflicting the many personalities with rank that have an opinion even though they're not involved in the fight personally. The common belief, as spun by media and by bored armchair pundits who just LOVE a drama story, is that everyone just drives around shooting at anything that moves. They have no idea how complicated it is not just to be a commander who has the discretion to engage or not, but just to be a 22 year old in an MRAP beset on all sides by not just the enemy, but your own chain of command busily tying your hands behind your back.

  10. That platoon of armor was hit by a pair of SU-25 Frogfoot ground attack jets, not something the separatists can field. The signatures are the massive number of high angle 30mm penetration holes on those T-72 turrets, and the evidence of cluster munitions damage (shotgun peppering) spread all over. There aren't enough wide-area incineration or impact craters to denote fuel/air explosive or high yield single-bomb payload, nor artillery. It looks identical to the aftermath of an A-10 Warthog hit. I should know, we've had the Hogs hit targets for us, and I've seen the result.

  12. The Korean war doesn't get writers panties as wet because technically, it's still a victory. The mission is still successful to this day. The fact that South Korea still exists as a free country is pretty solid evidence of that. But Vietnam gets clicks, and sells books and scripts. It's an easy outrage machine when you bring it up. The UN mission was to preserve South Korean Sovereignity, and it succeeded, and is still succeeding. No wall of text on your part changes that simple reality. Obviously, you've never been there. I have. Go visit Camp Casey sometime and tell me the UN didn't 'win' after doing the one and only thing they were there to do. You cannot see a forest for the trees, and you're bad at applying spin. One of these days people will learn that seeing a thing is always more informative than reading about it on the internet via editorials from some guy either selling a book, trying to get a degree, or who is just prosecuting a personal feelings crusade.

The Abrams is still a brilliant design, and when you compare it's capabilities (while in a different role) to my track, it is a good buy. My rig? I'm not so thrilled with the bang for the buck we're getting for the tax payer dollar. As a soldier, I DO care about what my equipment costs my people.

  18. It's important to note that Ukraine is now only tangling with a largely irregular (but entrenched) force, and the little green men are not to be seen. Even when THEY were rolling around, it was with very outdated armored vehicles (BMP-2's and BTR-80's, same stuff the Ukrainians field), and none of their current fighting vehicles (BMD-4M's, T-80U's & T-90's, BTR-90's) they have. Given the current political dialogue, this means 2 things: 1. Due to their zealous assaults, ethnically Russian groups are actually being met with the violence they said they feared in the first place, that Putin used as an excuse to back his Crimean velvet glove invasion. Ironic, in a way. And a self fulfilling prophecy. 2. Ukraine still has to be cautious about how they deal with this insurgency. Putin may be pulling back support now that he at least has Crimea and is facing the looming reality of REAL political resistance, but if Ukrainian forces go batshit crazy or have one headliner scandal of counter-insurgency misconduct, they will give him an excuse to start a full-on invasion with his forces unmasked under a pretense of stopping a "fascist genocide", and he will take it. Oh, hey they do love to be hypocritical about what constitutes a Fascist.

EIT (Entry Identification Team) Platoon Sergeant in the Yuma op area looking at Algadones and all points east. 24 hours on the OP, 24 off in 4 man teams with night vision, Light Alls and thermals spread about 700 meters apart on open desert road (Telegraph Road). In 19 months, I personally saw 4 crossings. Had to go and help 1 guy who was distressed and likely to die. That's it.

I may disagree with sending unmarked armed forces into a neighbor that poses no real military threat to Russia, but at the same time, I can kind of empathize with Russian troops who had to go in, and do their best to stay cool given a politically awful mission in the face of insanity with the locals. It's a shit job that you can't feel too proud of, all you can do is your best to prevent a shit storm breaking out. I can also empathize with the Ukrainian forces who feel helpless, but give both sides credit so far. Not a shot fired yet. Let's all hope for the sake of the human race, it stays that way. That's not thanks to Putin or the turn-coat admiral, or even bellicose rumblings from outside, but rather to the soldiers of both sides who are keeping their heads on straight for the sake of the civilians who would get tore apart in the crossfire.

  31. Turkey doesn't need to see how brave the Kurds are. They need to see that they can live alongside them, if not as kin, than as allies. Neither wants IS to succeed, but the only way there will ever be a Kurdistan is if that corresponding segment of the former empire in Iraq is sepearated for them. Turkey does not owe them a slice of their sovereign territory, but Iraq kinda sorta does. It wouldn't be the entirety, but it would be their own nation at last. That could grow to be Iraq's greatest ally (and possibly even to Isreal), and a hedge against rampaging fundamentalist Islam.

  35. Yes. Unless there is a 3rd party involved, the only interested party that has cluster munitions, or Frogfoot ground attack jets is the Russian Federation. The only comparable plane that could tightly pump that many AP rounds into a single T-72 from that angle, is the American A-10. Standard 20mm rounds out of a typical interceptor/fighter don't have that much penetrative or destructive force against a MBT, and are generally not used on ground targets (speed of the jet, purpose of the round). There aren't any A-10's nearby, and a gross yield bomb leaves a WIDE and DEEP crater and scorching, cluster munitions have less dramatic effect on the surrounding terrain, usually confined to their target type (Armor Piercing in this case), as was depicted in the footage. My guess is a KAB-500-L-KE precision laser guided munition, manufactured by Tactical Missile Systems, Russia.

  46. The answer should be relatively simple, if the commanders on both sides of the fence can keep their heads about them and keep the bullets in the magazines rather than the other side. Balkanize that shit, and this time, keep the ethnic Russians OUT of Western Ukraine. West wants to go EU, East wants to go Russian Federation vassal state. If it weren't for the treaty, the US should just say: Fuck it, deal with it, we're tired of trying to help anyone since all they do is spit in our face and embezzle our aid $$. There's 3 factors in play here: 1. Ukraine boasts a LOT of fertile land. This isn't a small matter, especially if it means feeding Russians with it, and cutting their dependency on Western wheat. Look at the conflict in Kashmere between Pakistan and India over water as an example. 2. A chance for Putin to puff out his chest at Obama, the "Leader of the Free World", who also happens to be Black. To say this is a populist nod to endemic Russian racism who see their race, land, and religion as one would be an understatement. A chance to stick it to the western Black Man and America is just too good to pass up for Putin. You would almost think the GOP put him up to it after the Olympics, the timing couldn't be better for both. 3. Russia is on a roll this year to get their "bad guy" cred back, and Putin supporting Russians are eating it up. Hyperbole, and outright lying both on youtube and in the press are nothing new to a propaganda state and it's citizens (you will see many of them spewing bullshit in this very comment section), and completely accepted by what are some of the most blood thirsty people on the planet, and who make peace with the fact that they are. Putin really does typify the men of his country. He's not pushing them, he's a reflection of them. They haven't been able to make much of a go of Capitalism and Democracy over the last decades, so they are looking back to imperialism and conquest for those glory days to salve their national identity.
