Steve C well thanks for the summary of the GOP defense. Because throwing spaghetti at the wall to see what sticks is working out so well. I will choose to side with the purple heart recipient over the orange clown.

@VMonkies thanks for the clarification. It is sometimes hard to follow these discussions. I assumed you where saying he would resign because like Nixon he would be free and clear. Yes the next president could pardon him. Interesting fact Ford wasn't the VP when the scandal broke. Theodore Agnew resigned allowing Nixon to choose Ford before resigning himself. So for the Republicans to repeat the Nixon solution to impeachment processing Pence would actually resign first and Trump would select someone as VP that the GOP could claim was free from this scandal to be the VP who pardons him. Matt Gaetz would be at the head of the line for people willing to be remembered as the man who pardoned trump. How is that for scary? But I suspect they would have to act before Nancy Pelosi actually starts the official impeachment hearing.

@fredsmith6401 won't work because there are too many state crimes he is already being investigated for. The govern of NY probably won't agree to pardon trump so he is looking at prison time regardless.

Steve C more likely the end of the GOP once it gets to a Senate vote. Notice how the GOP dodges any questions about the testimony and only attack the process and the messenger. When they can't come out and say what the president did was legal it makes protecting him a bad move for your own re election.

@VMonkies so what was your point? Mine was that situation wont repeat itself because unlike trump Nixon could actually avoid prison that way. Trump has only one hope to avoid prison stay in office and argue in court that the president is above the law. So far that defense isn't working out so well for him.

@fredsmith6401 I just hope draining the swamp is the one campaign promise he actually keeps and the Turttle is one of the Republicans who goes down with this ship. If they continue to expose themselves as putting party before country we could well see most of them removed from office in 2020 by the voters.

@VMonkies Nixon was only guilty of federal crimes. Trump did better he violated state and federal laws.

@fredsmith6401 his base is irrelevant. They are a minority of the voting public who will never move so don't bother worring about them. The independent voters have already forgotten they ever voted for trump. His base can't win the election.

@fredsmith6401 it is far more likely that Pence would follow Theodore Agnew and resign as VP clearing the door for trump to appoint a new VP who isn't cought up in the scandal already. This is how Ford became VP. Today 3 people come to mind as free enough of the trump scandals to play that role. Mitch McConnell, Graham or Matt Gaetz. I don't see many other people willing to go down in history beside Ford.

@VMonkies we will see how involved Pence really is as Trump looks around for the last person to throw under the bus. He has already hinted about phone calls Pence made. My guess is trump asked Pence to do illegal things and Pence definitely told trump he did them. So far all that is proven is how Pence spent government funds to enrich the president. There is a time when publicly taking part in self dealing would have been enough. Clearly we have fallen a long ways as a society since they forced Jimmy Carter to sell his peanut farm.
