  1. The issue is the farmer is probably part of the federal crop insurance program. That program requires that you distort the crop to collect. So what you are suggesting would void his insurance.

The sad reality is there is crop insurance and government bailout money so the farmers will end up getting paid by the federal government but they are required to distort the crop in order to get paid in our society. I say this as a farmers who was raised on a small farm the system is messed up.
