  948.  @danielsparrow3767  I graduated from a 2 year college in 96. The first semester my total bill living off campus was just over $2,000 in the fall of 94. In the spring of 96 my finial semester the bill was just under $6,000 yes it almost tripled in cost for the same college in the 2 years I attended with no explanation to why and the professors at that college where paid less then public high school teachers in the same city. Our college education system is definitely broken. No question about that. My grandfather was the first generation to go from a public education system that ended at 8th grade for his parents to one that ended at 12th grade. His parents recognized that in the early 1900s the skills needed to earn a living had changed and their commitment to their youth was to provide the education system with included those skills. The same was true 100 years later but our society doesn't feel the same commitment to our youth. Expanding public education to be a 16 year process is required to get the skills demanded by our modern society. However there is a free market solution that is also never discussed. Simply make college pay based on the results delivered to the students. That is what the free market claims in the goal. So in a free market system there should be a contract between the college and the student. If the student gets a certain GPA they fulfilled their side of the agreement and learned what the college was teaching. Maybe a 3.0 gpa. If the college education fails to provide a job in that field for the students who fulfilled their end of the agreement the students don't owe them anything for the education which wasn't able to lead to employment. That would end colleges creating bogus degrees in underwater basket weaving. The agreement would be x percentage of your salary for y years after you graduate. I don't know what the correct numbers would be but for the sake of discussion say 10 for both. Any college which can do better at placing their students in the work force will receive more reward for the better job they did education those students and the burden post graduation on the students would be based on the benefits the college provided getting them the skills they needed. Personally I am in favor of the first solution I think the society simply has an obligation to provide the skills our youth need to be functioning employees as adults and to earn a quality education. But if we want to believe we are caplistist we need to believe in regulated capitalism where the system is designed to protect the buyer. The service provider currently holds all the cards in our society. Education is a good example the college determines the cost of the education they determine what classes and skills are included in that education and then after the fact they simply expect the ignorant students (who signed the agreement to help end their ignorance ironically) are at fault for having gotten an education that doesn't provide the skills needed in our work force. That isn't a free market approach because the free market is suppose to have a check and ballance to avoid the seller explotinting the buyer. This is class warfare and my class is winning - Warren Buffett

1000.  @thedogfatherjt2243  I don't know I keep hoping that things are not actually as bad as they look. Then something else more outrageous happens. I make the comparison to the rise of fascism in Nazi Germany because the parallels are shocking. But I think the reality is that come November the true power here will want the appearance of a democracy. They have picked the next president who will insure nothing fundamentally changes in Biden. I suspect the game now is to let that transition take place and hope it quiets the masses from fear of the fascist who would have been king. But I think the real story in the USA is the little covered ecominic protests that Kyle Kulinski covered the other day in NYC. The people are waking up to the fact that income inequality is the real problem with our society that identity politics on both sides have been used to divide the public. But the entire time the billionaires have been robbing us all blind even profiting during the pandemic. I honestly don't think the issue in America is the trump supporting fascist leaning people they are a minority in reality 30% or so of Republicans in a society where half of the population doesn't vote. So say 15 to 20% of the population at large. That is enough to cause trouble but not enough to start a civial war. They will be rounded up by our militarize police force easy enough if they do more than walk their assault weapons in public. The real problems will come when the 50 million Americans who filed unemployment over the last 6 months are evicted from their homes. Something like half of all business rents and 1/3 of all home mortgages and rentals are months past due. Once the foreclosures and evictions follow that is what I fear. If people thought 6 million homes foreclosed on in 2009 was bad they haven't seen anything. I fear we are looking at the next great depression.

1359.  @thedogfatherjt2243  I don't believe biden on the renewable energy front. He was part of the all of the above decade that gave us the fracking boom. As to pandemic response your governments in Europe have done way better. Maybe not perfect but no one is. How do your rent moratoriums work? Here we stopped landlords from being able to evict but the tenants and mortgage holders are still responsible for the payment. Which means once the free on foreclose and evictions is lifted people can either pay the back rent current or be forced out. It is how the 2009 foreclosure process worked that made our current security of the treasury wealthy. Steve Manchin was infamous for his roll at one west bank IIRC during the foreclosure crisis. The Obama administration put the regulations in place that allowed it and Senator Harris who will likely be the VP refused to prosecute Steve Manchin for the crimes he committed in the process of foreclosing on homeowners. So I don't hold hope that a Biden administration will solve much. It will just be one step better than fascist dictatorship. But the wealthy elite will continue to increase our already insane income inequality. It is worse now than it was in the 1920s worse in history. I do understand that the wealthy are the same the world over. Infact given our globalization over the last half century they are literally the same owners in most cases. I worked for Osram for 5 years here in the USA. However Europe has better social safety nets so I suspect you are further from pitchforks than we are here. I don't see Europe on the verge of a grear depression worse than the 1930s unless the United States pull you down with us. But as to rebuilding trust on the global stage I think it would take a stronger leader than Biden. Or should I say a progressive instead of a neoliberal. I think the world over we have woken up to the failure of neoliberalism. That said if we had Bernie Sanders and AOC pushing the GND and actually approached the other world leaders saying this is a massive growth opportunity for all of us to rebuild a new energy economy we would have that respect back. Sort of a cross between FDR and the Marshall Plan. Where we use our soft power to make sure everyone wins. But the USA today doesn't actually have leadership in power like that. Maybe next time but by then I think we will have damaged our reputation too much. Honestly it feels like the fall of an empire to me. Often makes me think I now understand how Great Britain felt when their trading empire fell. When the sun finally did set again on the British Empire. Oh well this is way off in the weeds. Hope all goes well for you.

1554.  @leroycasterline1122  give me an break about the no choice talking point. Ask anyone in Norway or Canada or England if they would choose to have our for profit healthcare system or their single payer healthcare system. They will all look at you like you are nuts to even ask. Are you upset that you have no choice when your house is on fire? Would you rather have the government fire department come and put out the entire fire or only pay for coverage for the bedroom and kitchen. The livingroom isn't covered because that costs extra. Let alone covering the utility room with that dangerous heating system. Because choice in health insurance means what exactly? Do you like having to choose if you have coverage for cancer or a heartache? But not coverage for arthritis because that cost extra? I want the ability to choose any doctor without having to worry if the health insurance company has that doctor in network or if the health insurance company actually does have the doctor but do they cover the diagnosis the doctor come up with after I go to get checked out. Check out the David Packman video about his visit to the foot doctor after being told by his insurance company in advance that yes it is an in network doctor and you don't need preapproval or a referral they still refused to cover his visit and stuck him with something close to a $1000 bill because while the doctor was in network the insurance company doesn't cover treatment for the problem the doctor diagnosed. So if that is your idea of choice having the ability to choose a health insurance company who tells you that you are all set then refuses to pay claim sticking you with the bill. I will choose single payer where all doctors are in network and the government pays for their treatment regardless of diagnosis.

1880.  @enrique4693  I would have gone on TV and told the media that sence Mitch McConnell didn't see a path to get the relief checks Americans desperately need during a global pandemic I didn't see a path to override president Trump's veto of the defense budget. Use the leverage President Trump gave you putting the interests of Mitch and the entire GOP parties donors against those of the American public which should be the primary interests of the Democratic party. Bernie Sanders tried to do that but Democratic leadership went against that idea because they have the same donors. So I guess I know something that Democratic leadership doesn't know which is if you accept bribery from the same groups you have to answer to the same special interest. But on second thought the centrist know that also it is why they have already given the equipment of $32,000 per every American citizens to the corporate owner class in pandemic response. Ask yourself what would have been the response of the public if one of the two political parties went on national TV and said the other party wants to give the equivalent of $32,000 per member of your household to the CEO and board of directors of your company. But we believe that money will do more for the economy and better address the needs of the public if we provide the same money to each American citizen over the next 12 months. That would have worked out to just over $2,666 per month per citizen of the United States. Because infact that is the amount of money Congress authorized before the last round of pandemic relief. I know which party i would have rallied behind if that choice was made public instead of allowing the Republican party to say we have to give that money to the business community that bought us but we can't afford to give it to the working class citizens who fund the government and vote for us.

2070.  @geraldineh3494  you really need to learn to read what people wrote and think about it. I was talking about events that happened before 2016 in the Obama Biden administration. The policies we can expect to return to in a Biden administration. Because while I can't stand trump as much as you. I do realize that the world wasn't perfect before 2016 that the climate crisis was a real thing and all of the above energy policy wasn't helping. That fracking didnt help the climate crisis and it boomed under the Obama Biden administration. That Biden has moved the Democratic party platform to be more pro ff recently. Sorry if that doesn't fit your narrative that everything bad started in 2016. But my point is you are being doped so long as you accept that not trump is all we need to make life great in 2021. We will get not trump if anyone on earth at random is picked as president. What we need is to pressure that person for policies that are going to make the change we want as a society. But you are bought into the argument that orange man the devil and root of all evils. I am sure you wont understand the point I am making. Which is sadly how we got to this place. We got trump after half a century of picking the lesser of 2 evils and not demanding our politicians be good and do good things. Accepting more and more evil because the alternative was worse. Sure being shot in the face and murder is more evil then being shot in the leg spine and paralyzed. But maybe just maybe we could have an option that takes shooting off the table all together. Maybe we could be so bold as to demand the politicians do things we want not force us to accept the horrible things they want to do because they found a more evil alternative. I know it is currently considered radical thinking to believe we could demand our politicians actually put citizens ahead of the wealth plutocrats who fund their campaigns.

2651.  @hieian  where did Biden explain that when he campaigned for the senate democratic party? Oh right he didn't after the fact Bidem tried to call the check that the last administration got you his downpayment. Sorry but that is shitty neoliberalism at it's best. And in this case for no good reason. Why not just live up to his words and get you the $2000 check he said he would get if we got him control of the Senate? Classic miss understanding of the situation creating conflict for no good reason. What it does is show that the Democratic party doesn't understand that the avg American is $5000 behind on their housing payments rent or mortgage. That the vaccine won't be available to the general public for months and that a one time payment won't solve the problem. Instead of horning his words and giving us $2000 then addressing the on going issue he came up with this stupid logic that laughs in the face of the working class telling them they are only worth $1400 in a bate and switch logic game. While the federal reserve gave the equivalent of $32,000 per American citizen to the wealthy elite in the form of 14 trillion dollars of new money pumped into wallstreet and corporations. Biden is simply showing that he ment it when he told the donors nothing would fundamental change. There was no reason to post electoral victory for Biden to cut it to $1400 and come up with this crazy counting the last payment with this payment logic. It is a bate and switch which hurts him political for no reason. He should have put the full $2000 on the table and forced Congress to argue why people don't deserve it. But nope being a centrist corporatist neoliberal Biden compromise with himself before starting the negotiations.
