We need a general strike until we get Medicare for All

@nil981 violent revolution against the world's largest military is a stupid idea to start with. But if you study the modern violent revolution you will see that the government that resulted wasn't beneficial to the working class.

@dogeatdog6157 you need to study history. When the labor unions stood together FDR went from a centrist corporatist to a progressive and passed the new deal. He didn't run on the new deal he was forced into it by the working class strikes.

@dizzymetrics well as a self employed farmer there isn't much I can do in a strike. I already choose to withhold my labor from the multinational corporation that I was working for as a controls engineer for about a decade ago now. I dont think refusing to feed my cows and chickens will help get Medicare for All.

@dogeatdog6157 the establishment in the 20s and 30s where powerful as well. Like I said study the history it wasn't an easy fight but when labor standards together there is more power in the working class.

@kjhuang Nancy Pelosi is the example of why your approach doesn't work. She was bought and corrupted because she wasn't held accountable by her voters. Just changing the person whom the billionaires buy won't get you policy that the billionaires don't want. The last half century of politics in the USA should show you that Bloomberg has bought got all of them in both parties to use his own words. Voting alone won't solve the problem.

@dogeatdog6157 when did labor stand together against Obama in a general strike. Please proved the news reports to back your argument. You totally missed the point of the FDR reference.

@kjhuang better politicians is a great idea but history has shown it isn't a fast process or one that works overly well. Nancy Pelosi was fighting for Medicare for All when she was first in Congress now she is stopping the very same vote she demanded of the speaker almost 3 decades ago. Bernie Sanders said we will get Medicare for All when 1 million Americans protest for that change. The reality is all major social change in the last century came from citizens pressuring their politicians not from voting for the better candidate and going back to your daily lives hoping they will do the right thing. We need strong United labor standing together denying the barrons of industry what they value. That being the output of our labor if we want them and the government that they bought to listen to our demands. Failure to understand that is a lack of understanding of 20th century politics.

@kjhuang it is far more realistic to get people to strike. The teachers saw results from their strike last year. The workers in NYC striking for the $1 per hour just saw the train union join them and turn a train load around and ship it back to Ohio. I am all for election reform. Rank choice voting and more parties to break up the two party monopoly we have on politics is a must but if you don't see the value in labor standing together you are exnoring the history of the last century of change in the USA and around the world.
2
@kjhuang you assume a general strike would require all workers. Bernie Sanders said one million Americans is all it will take. That level of support is rapidly growing in this country. Yes it means we need more action like the train union workers supporting the 202 and turning the train back not unloading it. Unity is the tool that will get us the change we need labor United against the wealthy and the politicians they bought.

@kjhuang so what is your solution? Because your comment isn't helpful
1
@kjhuang so you say they are equally important I agree but by definition that means we need the general strike or AOC won't be able to get anymore change than momma bear and in 27 years time AOC will follow in her footsteps and block the next progressive from getting a vote on Medicare For All. We have seen how it works when you vote for a good candidate and go back to your daily live. Infact AOC stood with the 202 strikers that I talked about making my point that the strikes are needed.

@davidulanovsky8943 the womans suffrage movement and the civial rights movement where both non violent. Peaceful protests works. If you think Russia is an example of a government that works for the working class you have a different standard than I do for a government. As to FDR you are simply wrong Social Security is still very much a real thing. Disability insurance is still very much a real thing in the USA. Unemployment benefits are very much a real thing all started under FDR. Sure nearly a century of hands off by the working class has allowed the barrons of industry to erode the gains of the working class but they have not been erased. If you think things are as bad for labor today as it was in the 30s you need to study history. I know where the bodies are buried around my town from the quarry that killed young men from breathing in stone dust. Osha isn't everything I would like it to be but it is a far cry better than before FDR today

@kjhuang Bernie Sanders said we will get Medicare for All when 1 million Americans protest in a single event for it. The point being that if 1 million Americans actually stand together the politicians will act. That might seem like a lot of people until you realize there are approximately 350 million Americans in the country.

@kjhuang nice to see you know more about our politicians than a sitting senator who ran for president twice.
1
@shgalagalaa what makes you think we haven't been doing things? You need to get offline once in a while and see what is happening in the real world. Or do you think every single sitting member of the house who supports Medicare for All winning their re election was just people posting on the internet? Google Medicare for All rallies you will see that people where literally in the streets fighting to get change people are contacting their politicians. But nope you feel triggered by seeing comments over time. Got it.
1
@kjhuang I guess that is why you are president because you know so much more.. oh wait you aren't you are just a troll

j sauce wow you dont know your history at all.
1
@davidulanovsky8943 our democracy is only dead so long as the citizens refuse to stand up and hold our politicians accountable. But that is changing. The teachers last year proved how strikes worked for them. This year we have already seen some essential workers in NYC strike for a raise and they where supported by another union turning the train back to Ohio in solidarity with the 202 union. Those are the starts of a new labor movement in the USA because you can only push people so far before they have nothing left to lose.
