I have to say I just purchased an off grid solar system. It will eliminate the gas I use to heat hot water and cook on as well as meet my electric demands. I ordered it because based on my current monthly bills it will pay for itself in 10 years. Call me heartless but I didn't worry about the effect my leaving the electric company or the gas company would have on them. I simply said I can save money and not loose power for 12 hours at a time because there is freeze rain and my power company didn't do line mantaince again. Looked like a win win to me.
