Here in New Hampshire we generate most of our income from sin taxes and property taxes for the rest. No sales or income tax.The problem with that system is sin taxes are hidden taxes and you don't have a clear idea how much money you pay the government when you pay it. A prime example is fuel tax. Ask anyone how much they payed if fuel tax last year they can't answer because the simply don't know. Knowing what government costs is key to controlling spending. Something we don't do well proven by our national debt.Now that said our income tax system is a mess but it has one good thing it shows you every paycheck and at the end of the year what you paid in taxes. We need to look back to how the income tax was orginal implemented. When it started the standard deduction before you had to file was based on the cost of living. My grandfather always said in the early days of the income tax the avg working person didn't pay it or payed very little because they simply didn't make excess money beyond their living expenses. That is where we need to be go back to a standard deduction based on the real standard of living and only tax above that amount so the government isn't taking money Americans need to just pay their light bills and put food on the table.
