El Alamein wasn't his either; but lesser men would have tinkered and stuffed it up or ummed and aghed examining it over a few days and stuffed it up. Weygand taking over from Gamelin comes to mind. Montys mouth could run away with him and he was rather up his own arse; but a good general for all that.

@neilturner6749 The pilot makes it clear the airframe was totally stripped of all the external excrescences it was possible to remove. If we've any interest in 'planes at all we all know F4K/Ms were were very muscular, but not Mach 2 short of a shallow full-burner dive due to the Spey not exactly being a military engine and the designers/engineers not being quite able to get around that fact.

@frankteunissen6118 The Lightning "supercruised" thirty years before that became a thing!

@theotherside8258 Feature; not a bug. A simple way of finding out if your pilots were flying beyond the limits of the airframe.

Titanium fuselage? Somehow I don't think so. Even the US ain't that silly or profligate. 27 tons is bombed up to the bejesus: you will be totally subsonic and flying a brick. The airmen's narratives were great; the presentation grates.
