The Bomb-wise the USA achieved huge moral failure... especially when history tells us Hitler baulked and Heisenberg had done his best to tell the Wallies German scientists wouldn't go along with the idea even if he hadn't. Even the so-called "best" of us can convince ourselves very bad and dubious ideas are somehow warranted and "good".
