@yw1971 Look at the French performance in the initial week of Case Red. They fought a hell of a lot better than they had up to that point. You don't win wars relying on your enemies being perpetually stupid. The BEF was going home without its heavy equipment and just as the Wehrmacht had no conceivable way of crossing the Channel, we had no conceivable way of re-entering Europe. A.H. didn't know Musso would be silly enough to enter the war at this point either.

Doesn't make much sense? Large numbers of decisions in the 2nd World War make no bloomin' sense!

Hhmm. I've always wondered what the point of the DAK was; in light of your alternate hypothesis it looks like a grandiose demonstration to fix the enemy's attention while the real build-up goes on for an attack elsewhere. So what if a ersatz "forlorn hope" is driven in and the Italians defeated in North Africa? It will still be a long time, if ever, that Imperial and Commonwealth forces can cross either the Med or the Channel; and Germany's wasn't the only economy that was wrecked at this point: we were bankrupt, living on tick and US sufferance. All the while Roosevelt was taking the mickey in a very big way.

And eternal stupidity in securing those interests, unfortunately.

@michelangelobuonarroti4958 Musso was doing his own thang. So what if the Italian Empire in Africa was destroyed, Britain, the Empire, and Commonwealth were in no fit state to invade Italy and, but for selling their souls to the US and the Wehrmacht's own brands of stupid, probably never would have been. Italy's war was a useful distraction, bolstering Hitler's maskirovka on the cheap.
