As has ben stated many time by many people war could only be avoided if Hitler weren't Hitler and Germany could only have won if Hitler weren't Hitler. But Hitler WAS Hitler and defeated himself, despite all the prize opportunities he was handed in English and later Anglo-American stupid. Our strategy could have been clear North Africa; annexation of the French and Italian empires; clear the Med by destr0ying the Regia Marina; maintaining a blockade on Europe; and then basing abattlefleet in the East as a deterrent. Japans was a shoestring operation that only looked succesful because of our stupid. Yamamoto and the Herr's logicians called the outcomes exacly; it was only Chamberlain-Churchilll stupid that allowed things to get so dire in the first place.

EIGHT MONTHS to make Arras the settling of the Nah-zees hash instead of of a half-arsed raid. French was a twat but the Ist BEF did exactly what it was supposed to at Mons and Le Cateau and sufficiently discomfitted the Hun to lead them to wreck on the Marne. French and Smith-Dorrien have eight months to save the sum of things for pay?

  35. We bear the cost of freedom, this is the English burden. We will spend treasure to see that is so and have done in multiple worldwars since the middle third of the 18th century. WW1 was an error, we usually let the other guys, and our professional military and navy, do the bleeding. The relentless aplication of naval force force and the financing and arming of coalitions always works, WW1 was an error. Case Yellow relied on sheer gall and 99/100 wouldn't succeed. Everytime it has been wargamed at Sandhurst and the like, German victory only occurs if they are given special privelige and the Anglo-French are seriously handicapped. Wihelm said the Elder Moltke would have advised him differently; Hitler asked what they were supposed to do now. Both saw almost immediately they had gambled and lost. If it wasn't in large part for one particular Anlgo-American drunk, both wars would have gone a lot better.

Committing national and imperial suicide didn''t nearly make up for it; in fact didn't achieve ANY of the aims of going to war and GAVE Eastern Europe to Stalin and large parts of Asia would follow. The rest of the world we gave to the USA. Yes it was the right thing to go to war; but Chamberlain should have been shown the door when the Czechs were annexed to the Reich and the Slovaks puppeted. After that we behaved cluelessly as well as spinelessly and wound up with WSC as PM when HE should have been booted. Denmark/Norway was HIS fiasco. Greatest PM my arse; between them Neville and Winnie destroyed my country and plunged the world into a greater darkness large parts of it are still in.

We will do things as irrational as burning through our assets, wrecking our Empire and Commonwealth; putting ourselves in hock for the next fifty years and destroying any chance of restoring the nation to anywheree near its antebellum standing to ensure that where it is our wherwithal freedom will reign.

The Sisters and the Pocket Battleships to the Netherlands for instance. They would be saddled with a bloated armaments sector; while drawing it down, sell to China. That would be awkward for us, not wanting to provoke Japan. Re-arm Eastern Europe and the Balkans and make it secure from Stalin. Basically establish economic hegomony fifty years earlier. They could have had it all being primus inter pares with strong allies to free Russia's 'near abroad' if they so desired. As I said, get Kennedy's book out.

  57.  @derrickfield8957  Erm in 1938 there was no common border between Germany and the USSR; neither were the countries of South East Europe in Hitler's back pocket. We didn't actually NEED the Soviets. The French had a fuck-off army and a decent navy; we had the fuck-off navy and a decent army. The simple application of overwhelming economic, military, and naval power would have done the rest. Probably just the image of that power would have seen the Herr do the job for us. I wouldn't have cared; it is our business to make sure it is other than Englishmen who do the bleeding.
