I think some people that have private insurance, have it for extras services like dental, elective day surgery ,etc.(you can choose to have it for just those things and not have in hospital cover or you can have it for both). Things that may have a wait list in public system. Most people are happy to go public when it comes to in patient hospital, or emergencies. As for myself I have chronic health issues and thank goodness for the public health system over the years. Or I'd have been screwed. A couple of years ago I was pretty sick(and couldn't work at the time) my Dr made a phone call to the hopsital to admit me for treatment and tests. I was there by that afternoon....I had to wait a few hours in the Emergency department for a bed to be available. But after that I was taken to the wards and treated there for a week. 3 meals a days and snacks, I.V medication, 2 X- rays and a c.t scan and blood tests etc. All free. I walked out of there with nothing to pay. I cannot fathom having to be able to "afford" health care. People lose jobs, people get terrible illnesses or have accidents, people are single parents. Etc etc. The point is health care is a basic human right. It should never come down to who can afford it.
