Thanks for doing this video Ian. Yes K'gari (Fraser Island) is pronounced ga-ree. The k is silent. It was returned to it's Indigenous name last year, after a long campiagn. The name means paradise. Originally was named after Eliza Fraser who was shipwrecked there. She was a known sensationalist and spun a wild tale about "savages" and almost being killed by them (even though the Butchulla people actually helped her). That sold to the newspapers etc. Her lies resulted in massacre and dispoession of the Butchulla people on the Island. It also resulted in decades of negative narrative about Aboriginal people. It's the worlds largest sand island. It's a perched lake meaning it's rainwater, the water can't support sea life. Some say it has the whitest or purest sand in the world (based on silica percentage) . And others say Whitehaven beach in the Whitsundays has the purest sand. And others will say that the beaches at Jervis bay owns that title. 🤷♀️ (Check out white sands walk) They all look amazing to me lol.

@nicoledeloncrais5940 Very True. I also went to Hawaii several years ago. I enjoyed it for many reasons (learning more about the Polynesian culture, the active volcanoes on the Big Island etc) but the beaches while lovely, weren't the highlight for me. We're very spoiled for choice here. Not to mention our coastal walks are stunning. Parts of Oahu actually reminded me of the Gold Coast especially when I climbed Diamond head and looked at the coastline lol.

Yes she was a known sensationalist at the time. And her BS narrative resulted in the massacre and dispossession of the Butchulla people, and created a negative narrative about Aboriginal people as savages, for decades. The island should never have been named after her and her lies. I'm glad it's been restored. Paradise is the perfect name for it.

I have been to Hyams beach too. It's beautiful. It's been said in recent years that it the reports of it having the Whitest sand was a fabrication. Far north Queensland will also tell you that Whitehaven beach has the purest sand in the world at 98.9% silica. But according to what I just read, Lucky Bay in Esperance WA, has the whitest purest sand, scientifically proven. 🤷♀️
