  1. Thanks for doing my suggestion Ian 🙂. Just a bit of extra history, Australia's claim of that chunk of Antarctica pre dates the treaty in the 60s. The UKs claim goes back to the 1800s and Australia was "gifted" that section by the United Kingdom in 1933 🤷‍♀️. I agree though, I don't think anyone owns Antarctica as such. But we do need people to act as custodians or protectors and conduct research. Australia by location and history is well served to do so. We have 4 permanent research stations there as part of the Australian Antarctic Division. Which are based in Tasmania. I remember several years ago the Australian government (with the support of New Zealand), took Japan to the international court to stop them from Whaling in the Southern Ocean/Australian Antarctic Waters after years of breaches and please and warnings to stop. Australia is strongly against commercial Whaling. It's cruel, unecessary and some of these species are endangered. The court ruled against Japanese whalers and found their claims of scientific research to be bs. It was commercial Whaling disguised. They were ordered to cease Whaling in the Antarctic. The Australian government also sued the whaling company. They ceased for a while but ended up withdrawing from the international whaling convention and re commenced commercial Whaling in 2019 but promised they would stay out of the Southern Ocean.... Sorry went on a tangent there 🙈

  2. Lord Howe Island is beautiful. It's regarded as part of mainland NSW though and not as an external territory. The video was focusing on external territories.

  3. The other islands aren't legally considered external territories. He covered the ones that are. Yes there's many islands off our mainland but they're not all external territories. Lord Howe Island for example is regarded as part of NSW/NSW mainland.

  4. There are many islands off the coast of the mainland but not all of them are regarded as external territories. The video was focused on the official external territories of Australia. Macquarie and Lord Howe islands for example are regarded as part of mainland Australia, NSW and Tasmania respectively.

  5. There's many many islands off the mainland of Australia (I recently visited one in Qld) but most of them are not regarded as external territories. Lord Howe and Macquarie are part of mainland NSW and Tasmania respectively. So thats why they're not in a video about the external territories of Australia. I do think those islands are interesting though. I've watched a few lord Howe Island videos recently. Maybe suggest a reaction to this on Ian's discord? 🙂
