@yadiracamacho499 When I went to school in Australia we were taught the 7 continent model. Of which Australia is the smallest. The country of Australia is actually "The commonwealth of Australia". Oceania is a region not a continent. The term was created to include the Pacific islands in an area.(and New Zealand is actually lary of a mostly submerged continent called Zealandia). People confuse the terms in recent years and keep trying to rename the Australian continent lol. From the Australian government website: "Australia is a land like no other. It is the sixth-largest country (in land area) and the only country to span an entire continent."

In Aus, we're also taught that the Americas are two separate continents, North and South America. I think this is the most widely held view. We usually refer to the country as The US, USA or The States. And yes we'd call you Americans. I mean there isn't another word to use instead 🤷‍♀️. USians? Statesians? 😂. If I meet someone and I'm not 100% sure if they're from the US or Canada, I'll ask "where abouts in North America are you from?"

Oh interesting. I've never know it to be any different, I was taught North and South were separate continents, as part of the 7 continent model. My mum was taught the same in early to mid 70s. I just googled and it says the 7 continent model, which included north and south America as two and added Antarctica, was established in the 50s. 🤷‍♀️

I'm Australian too. Yes we were taught the 7 continent model which includes both North and South America as separate continents. The 7 continent model is the most widely accepted continent model. Used by USA, Canada, Australia, NZ, UK, India, Pakistan, parts of western Europe, Japan, China, Indonesia, Philippines and most other Asian countries.

@IWrocker I agree with you Ian. Also, he's the only Australian Ive ever heard of that refers to everyone from both continent as just "Americans".🤷‍♀️ Everyone else I know refers to people from South America as South Americans. As we are taught the 7 continent model here. People from Canada and USA we'd collectively refer to as North Americans. Or specifically refer to the country they're from; Canadians, Mexicans, and yes Americans for people from the USA. Also, the USA is the only country that has America in its name, so it makes sense that to call yourselves Americans! 🤷‍♀️ Prior to becoming the United states, what was the country called? I read it was the United Colonies? Yeah that doesn't lend itself to a good name for citizens... Anyways this is a non issue.
