Previously there was a varn vyavastha based on the nature of your skills and what they bring to the society and it was irrespective of birth however there were linguistic and structural differences throughout the Bharatvarsh aka the Indian subcontinent which sometimes resulted in mis-interpretation and mis-translation & often created mis-understandings which were then exploited and further miscommunicated to the mass by the Islamic invaders and Christian missionaries. This is the reason Hinduism in India has the Gotra system, according to which different Gotra was assigned to various families and then it was prohibited under the religion to get married within the same Gotra as any two individuals with the same Gotra are considered equivalent to siblings, and marriages between brothers and sisters are considered as "sin".
