In 2017 Varadkar, in order to increase political Irish capital in the EU, volunteered to increase Irish contribution to the EU budget, provided it would not see a reduction in farm subsidies for Irish farmers. He got that. The Irish want the EU to succeed.
The UK red-tops, misrepresented this deliberately so as to keep Brexiter morale up. After all, Brexiters never expected the EU would support the Irish over the UK.
