Pre-Brexit, Britain was used as a land-bridge between the continent and Ireland as it was economically wise to do so. Post Brexit, with trade switching away from Britain, and crucially, because of the delays at Channel Ports in England, it is now more viable to take the direct sea route. The extra costs appear to be marginal so far because truckers are able to avail of their rest time on board ship which means they are ready to go once they reach the continent which mitigates against the shipping cost. They can reach most destinations before they need to rest again. Furthermore, your timings for the sea crossing are way out of whack. Rosslare to Cherbourg - the nearest French port to Ireland - is 18 hours, while most easterly port served by Rosslare (Dunkirk) can be reached in 24 hours. Rosslare to Bilbao is only 28 hours. Cross border trade between NI and the ROI is booming, so the British government will need to bring that to an end quickly. It only makes Brexit look bad.

Amazon are not based in Ireland. However, those companies that are, provide capital investment into the Irish economy resulting in highly-paid jobs for a highly-educated workforce. About 250,000 people employed directly and indirectly by these companies, spending their money as consumers in the domestic economy. The UK has been bankrupt once in my lifetime and will be bankrupt again. As for an economy built on sand, it seems to me that the UK, having twice as many foodbanks as McDonalds restaurants, and with people working up to 60 hours a week being told to work harder to make ends meet, is the economy that is built on sand...

@kathleenmcmanus8509 It is fact that Foreign Direct Investment employs hundreds of thousands of people in Ireland. Its not a 'narrative'. The 'commercial taxes' you claim they pay are in fact corporation taxes, worth billions to the Irish exchequer. Today, even though the UK has a population 13 times larger that Ireland, its economy is only 9 times smaller than its bigger neighbour. That's another fact, not a 'narrative'.

Christ Robert, you are the very stereotype of the British Brexiter Ignoramus. Allow me to correct your misinformation. There is no country called Southern Ireland - its Ireland, or Eire in Gaelic; The British announced they were leaving the 1964 London Fisheries Convention in 2017, giving two years notice - this is the act that has damaged the Irish fishing industry in the Irish Sea, not the EU. Unlike the British fishermen, the Irish still have a market to sell into though. The UK provided 3 billion not 300 billion towards the Irish Banking Bailout, and contrary to your claim, this has been paid back in full. It was easy to pay back, because the loan the UK took out and gave to Ireland without Ireland asking for it, was so small. You think the Irish people have no voice? The people of Ireland not only have a voice, they express their voice more than any other country in the EU! Ireland voted for its membership of the EEC in 1972 in a referendum and for every treaty change since, sometimes rejecting treaties until the EU got it right and the Irish people were happy with it. Two anti-EU parties ran in the last Irish General Election and out of an electorate of some three million people they got 10,000 votes between them. Brexit was the greatest example of national self-harm until Putin invaded Ukraine.
