@brunobrauer6301 No, that happened in the rest of Ireland.

@These Colours Don't Run It has been well established, if you read a modern history book, that many of the atrocities attributed to Catholics were greatly exaggerated.

@InterdimensionalWiz Yes, there would have to be a border across the north where it interfaces with the Single Market, because they will be two different customs areas. Northern Ireland is staying in the Single Market, so there needs to be a customs border with the UK which remains outside the Single Market.

@InterdimensionalWiz What is best is the UK staying in the Single Market, but they won't do that.

@InterdimensionalWiz Ireland has no interest in leaving the EU, it is in its strategic national interest to remain in the bloc as it is the source of all of its prosperity. Furthermore, public support for EU membership consistently runs about about 90% in Ireland, which is quite different from the UK, which was a reluctant joiner in the first place. Brexiter notions about the EU being 'oppressive' simply don't wash in Ireland, where actual real oppression of British imperialism is still part of our recent history. It is the same for the rest of Europe, which experienced Communism and Nazism over the last century. The UK could join the Single Market and Customs Union, but they would then have to obey the rules of the club. Brexiters thought that because the UK is 'very important' in the world, that they could enjoy the benefits of membership without any of the responsibilities. That silly idea turned out not to be accurate. Pretty much all of the subsequent problems can be traced back to that English sense of exceptionalism. And one other thing. It is mostly the English who want Brexit. Scotland supports EU membership as does Northern Ireland. Wales also voted to leave the EU but its population has a lot of people who identify as English voting there - mostly retirees. That helped to tip the vote in Wales for leaving the EU.
