  1. As an Irishman, I am agnostic about joining NATO, but I firmly believe we need to take our defence seriously and arm ourselves at the very least. Neutrality made sense in WW2 for political reasons, but we are a liability to western security now and if we are not to join NATO then we should at least arm ourselves to protect our national interests, and to protect our neutrality. Besides, why should the sons of foreign neighbours lay down their lives for us if we are not prepared to fight for ourselves?

  2. @Lee Ireland could be invaded in the matter of hours, and Russia and China are listed as the two main threats. However, a much more likely scenario is that an Irish state with its head in the sand is used to undermine our neighbours: a plane hijacked in Irish airspace could be flown 9/11 style into a building or facility in the UK in the matter of minutes; we cannot protect our undersea cables in our territorial waters upon which the whole of Europe depends, and the Russian Airforce flies through our air space with their transponders turned off leaving only the RAF to escort them out again. Shoudln't we be doing that ourselves? No matter how well we arm ourselves, if a country really wants to invade us they will. However, if you are prepared to defend yourself you can force a much stronger adversary to understand there will be a price to be paid for their victory. It is quite possible they will not be prepared to pay the cost of their victory in which case Ireland will have defended itself without firing a shot.
