I agree. In Argentina they actually place a tax on exports in order to keep food cheap for Peronist voters. I'm all for helping the poor, but putting up barriers to exports is economically illiterate. Brexit does the same thing.

@ingridschmid1709 No - by leaving the Single Market, Brexiters have put a barrier up to their exports into the EU. It costs money to complete all the extra paperwork for companies in the EU and in the UK to do business with one another. These costs are passed on to the consumer making the goods less competitive. Ultimately, those in the EU will have source their goods from within the Single Market instead. In Argentina, the government put up a barrier to exports by placing a tax on it. This is passed on to the customer, making it less competitive, harder to sell - which is holding back the economy.

@ingridschmid1709 The move is counterproductive for the Argentine economy, while Peronist voters are being exploited for their short term thinking. That is not good for any Argentines. I stand over my original statement that the tax was designed to keep food cheap for the benefit of Peronist voters. This is how the Peronists get into power - short-term populist social and economic promises.
