Ireland needs the EU for trade even more that it needs the UK. Sort out the border issue, and you have Ireland in your corner to a good trade deal.

@ Johnny English Ireland already exports more to the EU than it does to the UK - this was not the case prior to joining in 1973 when between 80-90% of exports, with little added value, was exported to the UK. The UK has no trade agreements with the 'rest of the world', a 'rest of the world' which seems to place a higher priority on trade deals with the EU. Ireland's population will top out over 5 million in any case due to its higher than average birth rate and lower than average death rate. Immigration from the EU will also be a contributor. Few will come from elsewhere.

The EU didn't 'dump' immigrants into Sweden. The Swedes opened up their borders, along with the Germans. Ireland didn't, and won't. Why are Brexiters so ignorant of basic facts?

@ bo ptah Northern could stay in the UK, AND remain in the customs union. British military bases in Cyprus will remain within the customs union and single market and the British government does not consider that as returning the bases back to Cyprus... The referendum may well have been open to the UK and not individual 'provinces', but given that there is no longer any real demos in the UK since devolution, this argument is likely to wear thin post-Brexit.
