@ chris hendley Ireland made informed decisions regarding its membership of the EU at every stage - with referendums. The UK did not. EU membership has the support of 92% of the Irish population and only 48% of UK membership. The Irish will stay in the EU, and the UK will leave.

Normally unionists opt out of multi-lateral talking shops and then sometimes point the finger and claim they weren't included. They like to have their cake and eat it.

Last time I went to Dublin it was full of English people on hen nights and stag nights. We abandoned our capital.

I totally agree. I don't support his party but his Brexit stance has been fine as far as I am concerned. The UK politicians have only succeeded in making their Irish counterparts look like statesmen. That is quite and achievement.
2
@ Clare Smyth EU membership was never a issue in the Republic. You might a well be saying that 'this would never have been an issue if the rest of Ireland never joined the EU in the first place'...
2
@ Clare smyth You're being rather incoherent. What has a referendum that people celebrated got to do with homelessness and poverty? Relative poverty in the UK is running at 15%. Its 8% in the Republic. And what has any of this got to do with the EU?
2
@ Clare smyth Yes, there is evidence of Ireland coming out of Ireland's shadow. The Republic has a higher GDP per capita than the UK. It was only 60% of the UKs in 1973. Irish people are also more comfortable in their identity than English people are.
2
How do you explain your ignorance? Lack of education? Low IQ? What!
2
Loathed by the Irish people? The vast majority support Ireland's position in relation to Brexit - except for those who think Varadkar is soft on Britain, and the 8% who think mimicking the delusions of the former colonial master is a good idea. But why let the facts get in the way of your feelings?
2
@ Alloment Proof The people who call the shots ARE elected. The unelected ones can only suggest the shots. That you for proving my point.
2
@ Arthur twosheds The Irish have not considered the UK to be an unfriendly county since June 2016, and the British visitors have decline dramatically as they can no longer afford to come here. Enjoy Brexit.
2
Elizabeth, everybody outside the Brexit bubble knows its the UK that is shafting Ireland, but you are entitled to your delusion. And the EU 27 are the ones supporting Ireland's concerns, not the other way round.
2
Nobody is 'threatening' the IRA on the UK. NI is too complicated for English people and Brexit will disrupt the peace process. NI politics is based on the principle of consent and now must leave the EU without that consent. For that there will be consequences. Brexiters had better figure out who the UK is going to blame for their actions.
1
Brexit was based on borders - and taking back control of them. The GFA is back on removing borders. The UK has changed the status quo and it needs to own it.
1
Is it open like the border between NI and the RoI?

You won't be able to afford Irish products after Brexit...
1
Yes, I agree. Since Ireland joined the EEC/EU it has developed and diversified its economy, broadened its markets and added value to its products. It could achieve none of these while being overly exposed to the UK market. As we can see from Brexit, the English couldn't care less about Ireland. As a consequence of EU success, Irish people are more confident in their identity and their nationalism has become more inclusive. Irish people are comfortable with their place in the world. If you come from a society where you feel naturally superior to other nationalities, the equality the EEC/EU affords to all members, large or small, will feel like oppression. The average English person feels there is something wrong when the Irish have an equal voice to them, for example.

@ Crag Tilley Makes you wish you had a plan to leave, innit.
1
@ Micheál He doesn't know why.
1
We're not brothers and sisters. We're neighbours.
1
Its a democracy thing. You wouldn't understand.
1
Yes, you don't understand the EU. The people calling the shots are the EU membership, and their negotiating position is delegated to a negotiating team which is not elected. It is very simple really.
1
@ Darren You went around counting them??
1
If you also came out of the closet, who knows, you might PM one day too.
1
I see what you mean. The stage could do with some flower arrangements alright.
1
You should really come out of the closet.
1
Get elected would be a start.
1
No, its a democratic process - you just come out of the closet and ask for a vote. The EU has nothing to do with it.
1
Are you suggesting he do the bidding of the UK and conspire with foreign former power and collude against the interests of his own people? Its okay. I already know the answer. Varadkar speaks to everybody in that 'tone' that bothers you so much. Modern Irish people will not be tugging the forelock to anyone.
