You're only fooling yourselves. Ireland volunteered to increase its payments into the EU in 2018 Andrew, in order to show leadership and increase it capital across the bloc. Ireland and France are allies in the EU in relation to agriculture. Ireland does not compete with the French, we produce different agricultural products. Only 10% of Irish products goes to the UK. Of these about 38% are agricultural products. Of the agricultural products about 50% of Irish beef goes to the UK and 80% of Irish cheddar. Ireland is already diversifying its markets away from the UK because of Brexit and producing new products more appropriate to European tastes. This makes sense, because there is no paperwork for Irish products in the EU, and the gravity for trade has been increasingly towards the Eurozone in any case. So perhaps the the 15 ships a a weeks will have to be increased...

Countries don't pay back their national debts, shithead, they grow their economies in relation to it. How is Ireland 'barely making the interest payments', when the interest rates are negative and the financial markets are actually paying countries to roll over their debt? Ireland has a higher standard of living than you do in the UK, a country with more foodbanks than McDonalds restaurants and 13 places behind Ireland in the United Nations Human Development Index. The additional paperwork at Dover and elsewhere makes this new initiative viable and the threat to Ireland of the Irish hauliers being used as bargaining chips with the EU in the future is a strategic weakness for Ireland that is now resolved. These developments are a boon to Rosslare Europort, leading to new employment opportunities and is a shot in the arm for the local economy. Hauliers happy with the more direct port to port routes to Dunkirk, Cherbourg and Bilbao, leading to more rest time for drivers and less wear and tear on vehicles. It is further evidence that the UK is just a little bit less important to its neighbours than Brexiters told themselves, so you will need to point to environmental gains for the UK from the reduced number of Irish trucks on your roads instead.

That was because we Irish have very strong domestic and export economies, and we shrank the debt in relation to the economy. Unlike you, I understand Irelands place in the world and also that of the UK. Your country is not exceptional, and is not as important to Ireland as it used to be. Ireland has higher standard of living than the UK, a country with the worst covid death rate in Europe, more foodbanks than McDonalds restaurants and with UNICEF feeding children. Ireland wiped the floor with the UK diplomatically during the Brexit farce. I know which country I would prefer to live in, and deep down your envy eats away at you. I know Irelands place in the world, and now so do you.

Now there is paperwork, potential for delays at Dover, COVID-19 lockdowns with the French, and a British government that has shown the potential to use Ireland as a bargaining chip with the EU. That makes it feasible, and in Ireland's strategic national interest.

  37.  @brutallyhonest9140  You really are slow learner. In Ireland, we often vote more than once over a particular issue: abortion, divorce, EU treaties - have all subject to multiple votes. If the facts change, we change our mind. In the UK you remain wedded to the original decision because of a lack of confidence in democracy. The UK has little experience of referenda, in Ireland referenda are a normal part of our democratic process. It is not possible to 'push the Lisbon treaty through' under the Irish constitution. It is only possible to vote again on a different treaty or an amended treaty - which is what Ireland did. It is an example of Direct Democracy in action, because in Ireland sovereignty lies with the people, not in Parliament.
